Between still life and live model
Still life
Body Manipulation / Live Artists
Concept Caterina Perazzi

Work hanging along the performance.
A Performance-Opening.. body to body, with a model, an artist and manipulators.
Production of drawings of actions.

The public is invited to take part in the maneuvering of the model.

Standing, nude, in the center of the space the body model awaits with strips of bandages attached to her joints. Following the principle of sailors maneuvering sails on a ship, audience members approach her and "pull" on the bandages. These new manipulators take turns maneuvering the body model.

Connecting their propositions, the model and manipulators maneuver together dynamically as the stretched bands redraw the space. Momentarily, the body is stopped in a pose, which the artist captures, then maneuvered again through new tensions and poses creating a continuous dialogue between movement and suspensions.

In art, what the neo-Latin languages think of in terms of "nature morte" (dead nature) in English is expressed as "still life", a good point of departure for rethinking the representation of the living.

"Still Life" deals with the meeting of the fixed mark of the pen or the impression on film and the ever-flowing elusive condition of living that the artist is eager to capture. In the French tradition, one defines the representation of objects as “nature morte” (dead nature) and the drawing of the human body as “live model”.

Every time I remove my clothes in an art studio, and am introduced as a "live model”, a shiver goes up my spine… is it not obvious that I am living? Can I also expect to practice this art post-mortem!? Furthermore, how is it that my nude body has been desexualized by this clinical, cold expression?

In this work I wish to:
  • Ask the public to "dirty their hands" in order to get in touch with the symbolic power of the body and the contradictory instincts it conveys.
  • Re-present the naked body before any representations, essential, organic and imaginary.
I show this through a body still "outside the frame" which if in a frame would be easily received (once it has been captured and turned into an artistic subject), even nude, in the middle of a living room.

The performance puts one face to face with the limitations of ones morals and desires, emotions and taboos, and face to face with “other”, very near. What emotions, images, and memories are triggered? And how will these emotions and images appear in the drawings?

I wish to question the limits of the body and the relationship between bodies by creating a device of manipulation and in this, explore interdependence as a metaphor for physical and psychological human relations.
I have a desire to concretize these links making obvious their implicit power and their necessary organization, to show in flesh the tensions that inhabit the emotional and political social body.

Through a situation that provokes the senses and imagination, I wish to bring one face to face with the specializations of knowledge and their transmissions, and the alienation of the body in the modern work world.
